Our Story

The Sandy Hook congregation traces its origins to 12 people who met at a home to form a mission church in 1892. At that time it became associated with the United Brethren denomination and the first church building was on the corner of 19th and Elm Streets in Columbus. In 1923, the congregation decided to build a larger church on the corner of 17th and Home Avenue and walked from the old church on the day of dedication. In 1935, the church held its first VBS which is believed to be one of the first in Columbus.

In 1946, the United Brethren (U.B.) denomination voted to merge with the Evangelical denomination to form the Evangelical United Brethren denomination (E.U.B.). In 1968, the E.U.B. denomination merged with the Methodist organization to form the United Methodist denomination. In 1972, the congregation moved to its current location at 1610 Taylor Road and became Sandy Hook United Methodist Church.

The Sandy Hook congregation has been active over the years serving the community, educating the children and youth and leading people to Jesus Christ by serving dinners, donating and distributing food, going on mission trips, helping others with hands-on activities, supporting children’s homes, having youth and adult sporting activities, hosting revivals and Vacation Bible school (VBS).
